Bumer 2. Svoboda - Leningrad (English Subtitles).

My 1st video on Utube. Love this song sooo much! Translation isn't great (too wordy, imprecise; was trying to write in proper, full sentences--Sorry, guys!), but it was the best I could do at that time... Some observations about this video: . . (1) The car's radio plays a famous refrain by Aria, a celebrated Russian 80ies rock band. This old song is nested inside as if to remind that the path to personal liberties and independence from the big brother government has been long and torturous. . . (2) There is a nice video-lyrics-story overlap. Cellphone coverage in many areas is still disgracefully bad and often impossible. The girl climbs up a truck, used in repairing high power lines, trying to pick up a signal. The idea here is that sometimes you need a special trick/device/strategy to get "connected" to freedom. . . (3) Radio is nothing more than a sequence of dots and dashes. I like this reference to Morse code, the most popular way of transmitting information among amateur radio operators. It implies that there must be a simple, but ingenious, amateur way to get an unbiased information about reality. . . (4) At 2:29 take a look at the gasoline meter. It resembles a clock but with a hand that goes counterclockwise. To me, it carries much of thought-provoking symbolism. . .
